Challenge

John Conway's 'Game of Life', a captivating cellular automaton game from 1970, operates on a grid where cells live, die, or multiply based on mathematical rules, resulting in a turing-complete system.

Our version, GoL2, honors this classic while experimenting with StarkNet's gaming capabilities, addressing the challenges of adapting such a compute-demanding game for blockchain, especially within Ethereum's constrained Layer 1.

Based on a simple set of rules to experiment with cellular automaton, Conway’s initial experiments were done with pen and paper, long before personal computers existed.

Solution

Our ‘Game of Life’ adaptation allows every game move to utilize on-chain computation efficiently, showcasing StarkNet's potential for hosting compute-heavy dapps.

GOL2 offers players various engaging modes and features, such as Infinite mode, Creator mode, and GOL tokens. The game is now live at www.gol2.io, inviting players to explore and share their experiences.

Behind the curtains, a combination of modern technologies brings GOL2 to life, with plans to make our development journey transparent by open-sourcing our repositories.
